The Cup on the Curb and Three Kinds of People: A Poem

Discarded cup on a curb in a parking lot.

Trash

We’ve seen it

The litter someone leaves

In a place they shouldn’t

Beneath a table

Alongside a road

On the sidewalk

Or

In this case

Next to my car

In the Planet Fitness parking lot

We shake our heads

A garbage can is right there!

But even if one wasn’t

Why leave it here?

Take it home

Toss it in your trash

But, whoever it was,

Didn’t

Why not?

Laziness?

Spite?

Embarrassment?

(“I can’t let them see me drinking this”)

Maybe

Chances that there was a legitimate excuse

Or semi-excusable explanation?

5%

At best

The cup on the curb has me wondering

Speculating

Who left it?

How old was he?

Or she?

Rich or poor?

Somewhere in-between?

Fulfilled or frustrated?

Drunk or sober?

What led to the decision?

Was it a decision?

Or is this something

Some people do?

Without thinking

People not raised right

Never taught effectively

There are three kinds of people

Those who would leave a cup on the curb

(A small percentage of us)

I think

(I hope)

Those who wouldn’t leave a cup on the curb.

(A large percentage of us)

I think

(I hope)

And those who,

Spotting the cup

Shake their heads

But pick it up

Throw it out

Wash their hands,

And never consider

That we depend on them

The third kind of people

To rescue us

From the first kind of people

Which kind of person are you?
